The Battle

A portrait of DAM, the first Palestinian rap group, living and working in Israel. The members of Dam — Tamer Nafar and his brother Suhel — joined by Mahmood Jreri, born and raised in Lod, a mixed city in the centre of Israel. DAM was notable for their ability to rap in English, Arabic and Hebrew. Giving them special social impact, DAM is able to reach disparate audiences. The pictures were taken on the backdrop of Lod, a city known for its deprived neighbourhoods and high crime rates. In their first years, DAM’s songs revolved around their hometown reality describing the discrimination and poverty in mixed Arab-Israeli cities.

Hoppa, Hoppa, Hoppa, This Is Not Europa

A confused hooker is dancing alone in front of an empty stage; her skirt drops off her waist revealing scars of severe drugs use. A typical mix of African refugees and Philippine work immigrants, hookers and local shop owners are watching her. A neighbor feels sorry for her and hands her a towel to cover herself.
